Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of the system of relations between the Russian Empire and the Muslim communities of the North Caucasus in the late 18th – first third of the 19th centuries. Drawing on the examples of Kabardian and Nogai Muslim societies, the evolution of imperial policy is traced from flexible models of interaction that combined the recognition of Sharia and adat to militaryadministrative pressure during the governorship of A. P. Ermolov. Particular attention is paid to the letter of the Scottish missionary Henry Brunton (1804), introduced into scholarly circulation for the first time and examined as an imagological source. The document is analyzed not only as an eyewitness account, but also as an early project for reforming the system of frontier governance, based on the idea of transforming the traditional social hierarchy and converting the population to Christianity. The authors demonstrate that the model proposed by Brunton – the emancipation of dependent estates and the expulsion of disloyal nobility – largely anticipated the practical measures taken by A. P. Ermolov in the 1820s. The article reveals the internal heterogeneity of the Muslim clergy and argues that the religious factor served not so much as a cause, but rather as an instrument in the competitive struggle of social groups and in the Russo-Turkish confrontation. The scholarly novelty of the study lies in a comprehensive analysis of H. Brunton's letter within the context of imperial legal policy, which makes it possible to broaden the understanding of the mechanisms of integration of North Caucasian societies into the Russian Empire and the role of the external observer in constructing the image of the region.
